Giant Mine Remediation and Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAP) - Lead Federal Counsel
Carla served as Lead Federal Counsel for the Giant Mine Remediation Plan for over 5 years and was involved in a number of FCSAP remediation projects, including Canada’s most contaminated sites: Colomac, Faro, and Sydney Tar Ponds. Giant Mine is one of Canada’s top three most contaminated sites and is located within the city limits of the capital, Yellowknife, and contains over 237,000 tonnes of water soluble arsenic trioxide stored in underground stopes next to one of the world’s largest fresh water lakes, Great Slave Lake. This massive water body feeds the Mackenzie River which flows north into the Arctic Ocean. Project uses novel remediation methods that must withstand melting permafrost and the impacts of climate change. Carla received the Deputy Minister, Department of Justice Canada National Award for Legal Excellence, as Lead Counsel for the Giant Mine Remediation Plan.
